The AXIS Jiu Jitsu academy based in Yokohama, is offering free « Gracie Jiu Jitsu » classes to women victim or survivor of violence. Jiu Jitsu martial art is particularly adapted to women’s need as it is practiced on the floor, using specific technics which do not necessary require strong force.
The practice of Martial Arts, Self defense, can be an empowering process for women, as it can diminish their feeling of insecurity in public space, as they would feel more confident if ever attacked. It is nonetheless, not a sufficient solution to make street safer for women. Reducing the acts of violence by men and predators, has to be tackled directly with them, via training, awareness campaign. We can not put the burden to women to solve the solution by themselves.
