Project Description

Biking culture, in some cities, is still mostly dominated by males. So how to encourage more young girls to ride?

In the city of Baltimore the BYKE (Baltimore Youth Kinetic Energy) collective is teaching youth how to repair their bicycles and bike safely through empowerment and community building processes. One of the co-founder, Chavi explained to us that they quickly realized than more boys than girls where coming to the center. The reason was that girls felt « intimidated » at the presence of more experienced boys. To remedy this in-balanced, they decided to open the workshop to only girls on Monday night. Since the workshop has created the « monday girl night », more girls are starting to come to the workshop every other day now.
During their one month program, the girls learn how to repair bikes, ride and be safe on the road. At the completion of the program they are offered a bicycle for free!
